home network and printer connection problems with XP and Vista

Hopefully someone else is running into the same issue and has a sugestion. I
am testing RC-1 and running RC-1 on my laptop while the home network and
printer run off of XP Home on a desktop. I can connect to the desktop and
see the shared folders but when I open them on the laptop, nothing shows up.
It is a similiar problem with the home network printer. It shows up under
the shared folders, but when I try to connect I get the message: Access
Denied.

Any solutions?

Hi Mark

There have been a number of problems with the home network. It sounds like
perhaps a permissions problem. Here are a few things that you might check
out:

1. Have you ensured that the permissions have all been set properly in the
Share folder?
2. Try setting the permissions for Everyone for that folder and the printer
and see if that will allow access. It Everyone is not in the list of
permissions, add it, then set the permissions for full as a test. If that is
not the problem then you can disable or delete it.
3. Make sure that you are a logged on as a user of that machine, not a
guest.
4. Double check the passwords if any are required.
5. Make sure the machines are on the same Workgroup
6. Make sure you have "Turn on printer sharing" in the network setup
checked.
7. Be sure you have the printer Share properly set up in the Control Panel

Thanks for the advice. I followed your instructions and partial success. I
can view folders and content on the desktop, which runs XP Home on my Laptop
which is running RC-1. I could not find the permissions box. However, the
network printer is still the problem. I am still denied access. I had the
same problem when running One Care on XP but it vanished when I put McAfee
in. I have not tried this yet since I like the features with One Care, but I
do want to have access to wireless printing.

I have a laptop that is wireless, and I use the network printer on one of my
desktops. It works fine. Try this as a test; open Windiows Explorer on the
PC that has the printer that you want to use for your laptop. Locate the
folder that you have set up on the machine to share that displays the
printer. Right click on the folder itself, not the printer (if you have
already set it up to share), Mine is called Jan's Network Share, then select
Sharing and Security. Click on the Sharing tab>Check the box for Share this
folder, then click on the Permissions tab. You should see a window with the
word Everyone in it. Tick it and then check all of the permissions, then
OK/Apply.

Then click on the Security tab>In the Group of users list if you don't see
the word Everyone, click the Add tab and add the word Everyone, then set
full control for Everyone. Click OK and close out of that all the way. Log
on to the laptop and see if you can get access. It might take several
minutes for the list to fully populate. If this will allow you to use the
printer, then you can go back and reset the permissions as you like as long
as you can still get access.

I had the same problems and this is what has worked for me, and about the
only thing that does.
