Home Network and Passwords

CRAIG

I have a problem and hope someone can offer advice. I
would really appreciate the help.

I have a home network with a desktop running XP Home and a
laptop running XP Pro. Each machine is connected to a
rounter which in turn is connected to a DSL modem. From
the XP Pro machine, I can see and access the files on the
XP Home machine with no apparent problem. No passwords
are required (and since it's a home network, I would
prefer no passwords.)

However, when I try to see the XP Pro files from the XP
Home machine, the XP Home machine asks for a user name and
a password. I don't think I've set up any passwords. The
XP Home machine has two users, each with admin
permissions, and each having no password. The XP Pro
machine has one user with no password.

I have tried different user names and passwords that are
used for other purposes, but none have worked. As it
stands now, I cannot access the XP Pro machine from the XP
Home machine unless I can figure out what the user name
and password is -- AND DISABLE IT!!

Can anyone help??

Thanks in advance.

Craig

XP Home uses the "simple file sharing", meaning that it
will try to access the shared information on the XP Pro
machine by using the build in Guest account from the Home
machine.
Try to enable the Guest account on the XP pro
machine....maybe that'll help.

Run the Network Setup Wizard on XP Pro, which will fully enable file
sharing. In most cases, that's all that's needed. Tell the Wizard
that the computer connects to the Internet through a residential
gateway (router).

By default, XP Pro uses "simple file sharing", which uses the Guest
account for all access by other computers. If you haven't disabled
simple file sharing, then:

1. Make sure that the Guest account is enabled for network access by
typing this line at the command prompt:

net user guest /active:yes

2. If you've defined a network password for the Guest account, enter
that password at the prompt. To define or remove the network
password, type this line at the command prompt:

control userpasswords2

If you've disabled simple file sharing, the most likely solution is to
create a user account on XP Pro with the same user name and password
that you use to log onto XP Home. If that doesn't solve the problem,
see the full details here:

Thanks for the reply. I have enabled the guest account on
the XP Pro machine. Now when I try to access the XP Pro
machine from the XP Home machine, I get the following
message:

\\Laptop is not accessible. You may not have permission
to use this network resource. Contact the administrator
of this server to find out if you have access permission.

Logon failure: the user has not been granted the
requested logon type at this computer.

What does this message mean and how can I change the
relevant permissions? I have the the guest accounts
enabled (without the requirement for a password) on both
the XP Pro and Home machines.

Any further thought??

Thanks,
Craig

Thanks for the reply, Steve. I have enabled the guest
account on the XP Pro machine and have run the Network
Setup Wizard. Also, I've executed "net user
guest /active:yes" from the command prompt. Now when I
try to access the XP Pro machine from the XP Home machine,
I get the following message:

\\Laptop is not accessible. You may not have permission
to use this network resource. Contact the administrator
of this server to find out if you have access permission.

Logon failure: the user has not been granted the

Any further thought?? I'll check out the reference you
provided.

Thanks,
Craig

You're welcome, Craig. With the Guest account enabled for network
access, we're almost there. These steps should solve the problem:

1. Click Start | Run, type "secpol.msc" in the box, and click OK.

2. Double click "Access this computer from the network" and make sure
that the Everyone group is included.

3. Double click "Deny access to this computer from the network" and
make sure that the Everyone group is NOT included.

Steve, I really, really appreciate your help. When I
checked the Deny Access List, I found that GUEST was
included. I removed GUEST and I can now access the XP
Pro machine from the XP Home machine.

All seems ok.

Thanks again, Steve !!!

Ah, so it was Guest, not Everyone, that was denied. I'm glad that I
pointed you in the right direction to solve the problem. Thanks for
reporting the solution.

Steve,

When I type "Start|Run "secpol.msc", it display an error message
"window can not find "secpol.msc". This happens on my XP Home machine.
What does that mean?
Am I missing something? Thanks.

Hi, David. XP Home doesn't have "secpol.msc" or the local security
settings that it configures. Only XP Pro does.
