Have had two XP machines file sharing for several months. Now "Access denied"
message when trying to access SOME but not all of the shared folders over the
MS Home network. How can I correct this. There have been no changes to folder
sharing opitons and the ones I can access are set identically to the ones I
can no longer access.

Un-share and re-share one of the problem folders and see if it becomes
accessible. If it does, do the same to the other folders.

If it doesn't, there are many possible causes, and they depend on:

1. Which version of XP has the folders that can't be accessed: Home
Edition, or Professional? XP Home denies network access to the
Windows and Program Files folders, and to individual users' folders
under Documents and Settings.

2. If it's Professional, is simple file sharing enabled or disabled?
If it's enabled, XP Professional denies access to the same folders
that I mentioned above.

3. If it's Professional and simple file sharing is disabled, see this
web page for how to configure everything:

Thanks for your response, Steve.
Both machines are running XP Home. The folders I am trying to access, and
formerly was able to access, are not in the programs or windows folders. Do
you have any other suggestions?

Have you tried unsharing and then resharing the troublesome folders?

Did you try my suggestion to un-share and re-share one of the folders?

What exactly is the full path to the inaccessible folders?

I just tried again unsharing and resharing several folders. None worked,
those that have worked along continue to.

File path in both cases is :\documents and settings\User name\ My Documents
as well as some other folders under user name.

Thanks again,

Byron

To quote Chuck:

"That's how Windows XP works when it's installed on an NTFS disk
partition using "simple file sharing". It blocks access to the
Program Files and Windows folders and to individual users' folders
within Documents and Settings.

You can share subfolders within those folders, e.g. you can share
"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express" or "C:\Documents and
Settings\Username\Desktop" and access that folder from another
computer on the network."
