HKLM/Software - "Error Opening Key"

I have a problem with a client's Win2k server. It is operating as a
Terminal Server, and is patched with the latest updates. After normal
operation, usually for a period of a few weeks, the HKLM/Software hive
"disappears". Applications cannot read or write any keys in or below
that key, and attempting to view it in regedit gives the error "Cannot
open SOFTWARE: Error while opening key.". In regedt32 the key is
greyed out.
