History won't delete completely

I have a problem deleting files in my history folder.
Although most files are deleted, there are about 15 that
come up when I do a simple search of my history folder,
like for "a" or "1." Even when I right click to delete
these, they don't go away. Even after deleting my history
folder using Options, these files continue to show up when
I type in Internet addresses or when I go to change my
homepage. I've tried three different virus programs,
McAfee, Norton, and Housecall. Nothing comes up. Can
someone help please.

I want to add that I have deleted all cookies and used
smart protector. It's the weirdest thing, these files do
not show up in the history folder except when I use the
search feature. I have also used the windows "Find Files"
function, but these files do not come up. It's annoying
because they always come up on the autocomplete when I'm
typing in an address or changing my homepage.

OK, now I have tried History Kill also, and it still
doesn't work. Someone else must have had this problem
before right? I can't stop autocomplete, and I've managed
to find the dozen or so sites only by doing a simple
search (read original message) using the search function
of the history folder. When I try to delete these sites,
it doesn't work; they just stay there.
