history toolbar opens when IE opens

I am using IE 6 with XP home. I view the history toolbar as a frame to the
left of the main web page. I then close the toolbar. I then close iE. The
next time I open IE the history toolbar is open. How do I get it to close and
stay closed when I open IE again?

Hi Ray,
Sorry you can't. IE saves the current configuration with the History (or
Favorites bar) displayed.

You can open the History folder in its own IE window by typing the following
url in the Address bar(not in IE7 though).
shell:History
If that helps.

Regards.

Hi Rob: Thank you for your response. You are saying that IE saves the
configuration it is in when you close it. But that is exactly what is not
happening. That is, after viewing the history toolbar, I close it so all I
have is a web page with no part of IE open. I then close IE. When I open it
again it is not in the same configuration it was in when I closed it, but the
history toolbar is now open. Any suggestions?

Hi Ray again,

I am stumped. I don't know why your IE is behaving in that manner?

The only thing that comes to mind is to reset the toolbar layout (a registry
key). Its a bit complicated to describe but I have a download you may like
to try

http://www.iecustomizer.com/itbarlayoutdownload.htm

(I am only guessing here. I am not sure if this registry key includes values
for the display of Explorer Bars)

Also check what add-ins you have installed. The only other way to force the
display of an Explorer Bar when IE opens is a BHO (Browser Helper Object)
that is using a command 'ShowBrowserBar'. You can test this by disabling
BHO's - Tools>Internet Options>Advanced>Enable third-party Browser
Helpers' - uncheck to disable.

Ofcoarse always check for malware or spyware although I have not heard of
any that force the History bar to display each time IE is opened.

Regards again.
