History problem in IE6

If i click History on IE6 toolbar, the left hand pane opens with the history
folder. If i click the folder a file appears beneath it called index.dat and
if i click this a message comes up saying "The document C:\WINDOWS\
TEMP\History\History.IE5\index.dat is in use by another application and
cannot be accessed".
What other application is using it and why can't i view history items like i
could up to a few weeks ago when this problem started?
BTW, if i try to view the history folder in explorer i get the same message
and there is no history of visited web sites showing.

Rob,
Possibly your History folder is corrupt:
[XP\2K]
Log on as Administrator and delete the desired <username> folder(s).

"C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\HISTORY"

Note: McAfee AV with ActiveX controls enabled is known to cause History
problems.
