Hi, i am trying to locate some web sites that I visited a while ago - I can't
access them using the history function on explorer but undertand that all the
info is contained in the index.dat file in IE history. is there any way that
I can view the info in this file or is there another way to look at the older
history

thanks

Hi!

Try to use IEHistoryX from http://www.585Soft.com/IEHistoryX.asp It can
show all history entries stored in index.dat files.
On history tab press find button, select date-time range or check Show
All and then press ok. Also you can find histoy entries by entering
part of text in URL or page title.

Two possibilities with IE without resorting to third-party solutions.

1. in a cmd window enter:

cd /d %userprofile%\Local Settings\History\History.IE5

(Note: you haven't given us your OS. This is the path normally used on XP.)

find /i "Visited:" index.dat >visited.txt

notepad visited.txt

2. If your TIF has a longer retention period than your History
and any files from the site were cached or reused when you visited it
you can use the TIF viewer to help find it.

E.g. open the viewer via IE Tools, Options, Settings..., View Files
Keystrokes: Alt-T,O,Alt-S,V
Then the View in the viewer that I prefer is Detail, sorted by Last Accessed
Keystrokes: Alt-V,D Alt-V,I,Last Accessed
