History is Blank

I have Windows saving 7 days of history, but nothing is ever recorded?! I use
Zone Alarm and that is set to not clean it out with it's cache cleaner
either. I also use McAfee, but don't think that is an issue. I want to see
the history on this p.c. as it's used by my teenager. Thanks for any help!

Has it occurred to you that Windows may be trying to save the History, but that your
teenager is clearing History manually? That can be done in Internet Explorer 6>
Tools menu> General tab, Clear History button.

Individual History entries can also be removed by clicking the History button on the
IE toolbar, then selecting individual items and pressing Delete on the keyboard.

It can be, if there's an ActiveX internet filter enabled.

Look under "History - not being saved"

Or, the history folder may be corrupted. In Safe Mode you should be able to
delete the folder; it will be re-created. You may need to do this from
another account.

Well, it's also possible that the teenager is realizing this and deleting
the history so you can't see it.

If you have issues like this, you might consider parental control software.
NetNanny is one, and someone here suggested another recently, but I don't
recall the name. The key to all of these is the integrity of the password.

Yes, but I've tested it myself and there are no pages I've been to so I know
it's not my teenager :) Thanks!!

Thank you for the suggestion - I will delete the folder and try it. I know
it's not my teen as I've tested it myself and no pages show up that I've been
to either. We do have parental software as well - thanks again!!

Firewalls often also contain lists of sites visited.

Our firewall stopped listing the sites at the same time Windows stopped
listing the history. Very strange!! We just moved our temp internet file
folder (couldn't delete it in safe mode) and it didn't help - still no
history tracking.

The temporary internet files folder isn't the History folder. I don't have
an XP Home system here, but on my Pro systems it's located at

\documents and settings\<profile name>\local settings\history

IE will have to be completely closed before doing this.

If the firewall isn't listing sites either, you should probably ask the
firewall vendor's support for advice as well.

Hi - I went looking for the history folder last night (in the same
subdirectory that you listed) and I couldn't find it. I wonder if history
isn't being saved because I don't have the folder created (or it's gone for
whatever reason.) I would assume it would create another one immediately.
Right now I'm searching and Local Settings is coming up as hidden folders.
I'm even logged in as Administrator so I should be able to get to them/it.
I'll do some research on hidden folders now. Thanks!

These folders are all marked as Hidden/System. Unless you turn on the
view, you won't see them.

Not unless you turn on the view of hidden and system folders. In Explorer,
choose Tools, Folder Options, View, Show Hidden Files and Folders, and you
may also want to de-select "hide protected operating system files".
However, this will cause a few files to appear in folders and the desktop
that you didn't know were there.

BTW, this can also be a problem for backup apps. Some email clients, like
Outlook and OUtlook Express, store their files in hidden folders. When
specifying a backup set, these hidden folders are sometimes missed... and
so is the email.
