highlighting sentences in Powerpoint

Is there anyway to highlight words or sentences within a
text box in powerpoint?

There is no way I know of to do it by setting a formatting option, but what
you could do is create a drawing box of the highlight color (say yellow) and
put it behind the text you want highlighted. It creates the same effect but
is a little more work. Make sure you set the box to have no line on it or
it will look strange.

In 2002 and 2003, you can add emphasis by way of text animation - Add
effect - emphasis and choose from the many options.
In 97 Dave is absolutely right
