Highlighting Selected Objects

Hi All.
As a newbie to XP may I ask advice on a simple thing. I have just upgraded
from ME. In ME when you click on an item a dotted box appeared around the
object to show that the object is being found, or action is underway. I'm
sure you know what I mean. Anyway, my bright and shiny XP Upgrade doesn't do
it.Consequently it is not possible to tell whether the machine is processing
your request or whether the mouse didn't quite get clicked in the right
place. This can be a problem in logging in to one financial site where, if
you click a second time you are taken back to the beginning of the login
process. Very frustrating.

XP does it this way, a single click should highlight the file and a
doubleclick should execute it or give an error message that it cannot open
it. Hovering your cursor
over the file should show the file's properties. Or am I missing something?
