Highlighter not on formatting toolbar

The highlighter tool appears to appear on the Formatting Toolbar at random,
sometimes there, sometimes not.

How can I nail it down so I can use it with facility?

Right-click on a toolbar and Select Customise. Make sure that you check the
option to Show Full Menus. That will kill off the idiotic adaptive menus.

I'm going to guess that you're using a version prior to 2007. Toolbars
are tied to templates, so unless you are changing templates, the
buttons should not vanish. Maybe you can experiment to determine under
which conditions the button appears.

I can't imagine that it is "random" unless there is some sort of macro
virus at work.

Is it possible that you have installed a plug-in that is causing this
issue?

And if the Standard and Formatting toolbar are sharing a single row, you
need to set them to be displayed on two rows.
