Highlighted Bullet

Ronnie

I am editing a document someone else created. There is a list of numbered
items. One of the numbers is highlighted. I cannot remove the highlighting.
Any ideas on how I can remove a highlighting from a bulleted item?

Is it just the number itself that's highlighted or the whole line? If it's
just the number, try removing the numbering, then reapplying. You can also
try copying formatting from a line that's working (be sure to include the
paragraph marker).

It could also be that there's some hidden text in the line that's
highlighted and only showing up on the number. Try showing hidden text and
revision marks. (Displaying the markup will let you see if there are hidden
comments that are causing the highlight.)

If it's the entire line, have you checked to see if it's background shading
instead of highlighting?

To add to (or reinforce) what Kathy has said, formatting that applies only
to an auto number is often formatting that has been applied to a paragraph
mark. Even though you may think you have removed the formatting, or applied
it carefully to everything but the paragraph mark, Word's "helpfulness"
often works against you. Display nonprinting characters so you can see the
paragraph marks, select just the paragraph mark, and remove the formatting
from it.
