High numbers of packets being sent

Whenever I am connected via DSL to the Internet using my
notebook computer (XP home edition) the activity
properties of my connection shows a tremendous number of
packets being sent (for example, I have only been on for
19 minutes, but 734,439,408,983 packets have been "sent"
and 1278 received). I have scanned my computer numerous
times for viruses, etc. using Norton Antivirus, SpyBot,
Adware, etc. This has been going on for a couple of
months now and I cannot figure out how to fix this. Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I doubt anything could send that many packets. It's probably a bug in the
NIC driver and might be fixed in a newer version.
