Packets sent vs Packets received

Under my "Local Area Connection Status" there is the heading of "Activity"
and under that heading is of course "Packets".

Currently as I type the number of packets sent is 17,643,725,698,059.
The number of packets received is 70,472. To me, the one whos picture
appears next to the word novice in the dictionary, this looks way wrong. Is
it? If so, how can I correct this problem? Currently my Norton Internet
Security is turned of as well as my Windows Firewall. I thought one of these
two might have something to do with my issue.

I welcome an answer from anyone.

I don't think that the firewalls are causing the problem, and I
recommend turning one of them (but not both of them) on.

The problem is probably caused by the network adapter's driver
program. Downloading and installing an updated driver program might
fix it.

I have the same problem. All was fine until I recently upgrade to WXP SP2.
All networking capablities work fine except the excessive "packets sent". I
have run several virus and spyware checks and found nothing. My single
firewall appears to be functionaing well. The error occurs on my Compaq evo
n610c laptop only on the Intel PRO/100 VM network adapter, built onto the
mother board. The Intel PROSetII software which monitors the adapter, has a
much more reasonable packets sent vs. packets recevied ratio. Neither HP nor
Intel, have new drivers for this adapter. It's an older laptop. Any thoughts
