I have Word 2003. How can I hide the page numbers from the first four pages
so that page 5 has the number 5?

Annlei:

The very best way is to insert a section break (odd page or next page type)
before page 5. In a Word document, each section can have its own first, even,
or odd header and footer.

Say you do that, and now pages 1-4 are section 1, and pages 5-n are section 2.

Place the insertion point (cursor) anywhere in section 2. You can verify
that it's in section 2 by looking at the status bar at the bottom of the
window.

Click View > Header and Footer then click the Switch Between Header and
Footer toolbar button to put the insertion point in the footer. Make sure
that the Same as Previous setting is turned off (the Same as Previous button
is popped out, and there's no text at the top of the footer box saying "Same
as Previous". Do that check for the even and odd footer. You can use the Show
Previous and Show Next toolbar buttons to move from footer to footer.

While you're still in a section 2 footer, click the Format Page Number
toolbar button, and make sure that page numbers for section 2 continue from
section 1, rather than restarting at 5.

Now use the Show Previous button to skip up to the section 1 footers. Simply
delete the page number from the footers.

There are two ways to put page numbers on a page. You can insert them in a
floating frame that's anchored in the Footer paragraph mark, or you can
insert a page number field inline in a Footer paragraph. Do whatever you have
to do to delete the frame or the field.

That should do it. Close the Header and Footer toolbar and check your work.

Dear Bear, thank you for your very detailed hints; they worked, of course.
