hidden paging

We want to set up a number of undertakings with a page two that says, on two
lines, for example: "Environmental Undertaking" and then "Page two of two".
The hitch is that sometimes all of the information fits on one page and it is
not necessary to go to the second page. We don't want to waste space by
creating the document as a two page document in the first instance. Rather,
we want a one page document that will print the paging and some extra text
only if the text spreads to two pages or more.

Any suggestions?

This is very easy to do using the "Different first page" setting. For
instructions on how to do it, see

about setting up letterhead, the principle is the same.

Put two pages in your template (just press Ctrl+Enter to get a page break -
this is only temporary)

Now View > Header and Footer
Click on the Page Setup button on the HeaderFooter Toolbar
On the Layout tab, check "Different First Page"
Close the Page Setup Dialog.

Put whatever you want in your First Page Header and Footer.
Put whatever you want in your Other Pages Header and Footer.
Close Header/Footer View

Delete the second page you created at the beginning. The Header and Footer
you entered will be remembered and appear whenever a document based on the
template runs to a second page.

Method 1: Set up your template to use a different first page header/footer.
Add a page break to the template and set up your headers and footers for
first and subsequent pages. Read Help on how to do 'page x of y'. Delete the
page break in the template. Now, when you create a document, if it's only
one page, you get the first page header/footer; if it spills, you get the
subsequent pages header/footer also.

Method 2: Use IF fields for the conditional text.
