Hidden option

I need to know what the following does:

1)Format/Cells
2)Click on the Protection tab while in a cell
3)Select the Hidden option

When I tried this there seems to be no effect...
 
After you protect the worksheet (Tools, Protection, Protect Sheet) a cell's
contents/formula will not be visible in the formula bar.
 
By default, all cells are locked and visible. If you unlock some cells and
Tools>Protection>Protect Sheet, you will only be able to enter data into the
unlocked cells. When a cell is hidden, the contents are not shown in the
formula bar once the sheet is protected as above. The cell itself is visible
under these conditions.
