How can I add a hidden hit counter that either reports to a file on my IPS or
is hidden from the user and I can bring up either with a small icon.

I thought of adding the hit counter to my dynamic web template in a
invisible layer but that will count for every page and I don't know how to
view it.

Not possible when using the FP hit counter. Check with your web host regarding server stats.

Google Analytics works great for this, and it's free. I found it very easy
to set up, and the reports are well-designed and easy to read. I used to use
the server statistics my hosts provided, but G.A. is so superior that I use
it on just about any site where I need usage information.
