hidden folders and files

I have recently upgraded my OS from 98 to 2000. Now some
of my data files and folders do not show up in Explore.
However, if I do a search in Explore they appear in the
list. How do I get them to appear all the time and why
has this happened?

In explorer select tools pulldown then folder options.
Select view tab. There is an option "Show hidden files and folders"
 
The desktop and some other folders you see are a combination of C:\Documents and
Settings\All Users\<special folder> and C:\Documents and Settings\<user
name>\<special folder>.
