Hidden Files

Hi

In my Documents and settings\....\temporary internet files folder, when i
look at this through the browser (with show hidden files switched on) there
appears to be no objects in the folder. yet when i run my anti virus
software it is picking up an infected file, and there are a number of other
files and folders in the 'empty' folder

Anyone any ideas how I can get rid of these files.

Thanks

Have you tried emptying your Temporary Internet Files in Internet Explorer?
I'd personally recommend making the settings on them a much smaller number,
if it is above about 360MB.

Empty your Temporary Internet Files and shrink the
size it stores to a size between 10MB and 360MB..

- Open ONE copy of Internet Explorer.
- Select TOOLS -> Internet Options.
- Under the General tab in the "Temporary Internet Files" section, do the
following:
- Click on "Delete Cookies" (click OK)
- Click on "Settings" and change the "Amount of disk space to use:" to
something between 10MB and 360MB. (Betting it is MUCH larger right
now.)
- Click OK.
- Click on "Delete Files" and select to "Delete all offline contents"
(the checkbox) and click OK. (If you had a LOT, this could take 2-10
minutes or more.)
- Once it is done, click OK, close Internet Explorer, re-open Internet
Explorer.

Something else you'll want to consider is that the "virus" may have gotten
into your System Restore. Turn that off/on and set a manual point after you
have emptied your TIFs. (This, of course, will erase any previous restore
point you have.)
Turn off System Restore.

Reboot.
Turn on System Restore.

Make a Manual Restoration Point.

Content.IE5 is a Hidden System folder.

C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5

You do not have to *see* the Content.IE5 folder to delete its contents.

To delete *all* Temporary Internet Files...

1) Start | Run | Type: inetcpl.cpl | OK
Or right click the Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop.
Or: Start | Settings | Control Panel | Internet Options.
Best to do this with all instances of Internet Explorer closed. Especially
if there are a large number of files.
2) On the General Tab, in the middle of the screen, click on Delete Files
3) Check the box Delete all offline content {This cleans >> C:\Documents
and Settings\YourNameHere\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files AND
C:\Documents and Settings\YourNameHere\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5 and \Content.MSO
4) Click on OK and wait for the hourglass icon to stop after it deletes the
temporary internet files
5) You can now click on Delete Cookies and click OK to delete cookies that
websites have placed on your hard drive.
-----

If you want, try this: Open IE | Tools | Internet Options | Advanced tab |
scroll down to the bottom | check: Empty Temporary Internet Files folder
when browser is closed | click Apply | OK. Entirely up to you, but if you
want to be rid of this, it is done automatically. Deletes the content of
C:\Documents and Settings\YourNameHere\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files but not the Content.IE5 or Content.MSO folders.

Also: Start IE | Tools | Internet Options | General tab | Days to keep
pages in history: 0 | Apply | OK.
