Hiccups in Explorer on C Drive

I've been having problems with my C drive. When I move files and do
other stuff, windows explorer hiccups. THe screen flashes, icons and
desktop disappear momentarily, and then icons reappear in the task
bar, one by one.

This happens several times an hour.

I ran chkdsk /f.
I ran Norton Utilities 2002, Disk Doctor, which found errors and
scheduled a repair. (I think it rain chkdsk /f).

It's been not quite as bad since I did those "repairs", but it is
still happening. I think there's something wrong with the file tables
or index or whatever.

What can I do to fix this?

Running WinXP Home.

Just for interest, after the problem happens again, have a look in the Event
Viewer, Application branch, to see if there are any Winlogon entries saying
"The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted.".

[ Start > All Programs > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer ]

For the last week or so, I've been getting the same symptoms as you, always
accompanied by the above error. The shell seems to restart OK, except that
it always loses my (user startup) notification area icons.

This seemed to start after I installed KB840374 via Automatic Update.

Anyone know what's wrong?

I don't think my problem is from KB 840374. My problem has been
happening for 3-4 days, and I installed 840374 just yesterday.
It's not hard drive -- when I boot to the other drive, I can use
the C drive to read and write and run programs, all without any
problem.
I've been through all the virtus and bot scans, and nothing turns
up. I don't think it's malware; I practice "safe hex."
It doesn't match up with my application errors. I checked the
log and found errors in explorer, internet explorer, zuma, feeding
frenzy, and family tree maker, as follows:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Faulting application
explorer.exe, version 6.0.2800.1106, faulting module
winhlp32.dll, version 1.6.0.0,
feedingfrenzy.exe, version 2.4.2.2, faulting module unknown,
version 0.0.0.0,
explorer.exe, version 6.0.2800.1106, faulting module ntdll.dll,
version 5.1.2600.1217,
iexplore.exe, version 6.0.2800.1106, faulting module unknown,
ftw.exe, version 10.0.331.0, faulting module ntdll.dll, version
5.1.2600.1106,
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

But the hiccups happen a lot -- and there's only a few
application errors.

????? What to do?????

The first thing I do when stuff like this happens is to remove temp
files with disk cleanup, then delete the contents of Windows\Prefetch
(just the contents), then run system file checker (have your install CD
if you don't have an \i386 directory on the boot drive). From a command
prompt type: sfc[space]/scannow[enter]. It will take a few minutes to
verify the integrity of all the system files.
