Hibernation

I'm using a Dell Latitude D800, running windows XP. The
laptop came with the OS pre-installed. When my printer
software for my now unsupported HP-LJ3100 is installed,
the PC will not go into Hibernation. It pops up a box
telling me that the Logical Printer Port Device is not
allowing it to go into Hibernation. If I disable the LPT1
port in device manager, OR uninstall the printer software,
it will Hibernate without a problem.

This was not a problem on my previous laptop, an HP
Inspiron running windows XP aswell.. Dell says it's a
problem with the Windows installation, Hp says they don't
support the printer anymore, does anyone have any idea
what is going on? Should I be reinstalling XP?

Thank you,

Have you checked your current notebook's Printer port
settings in BIOS ?. There are a number of types of ports
that can be configured, Standard, Bi-Directional, Epp &
Ecp. If the printer port is not configured for Bi-Direction
or ECP,EPP then the printer cannot communicate back
to the PC. This makes it a one-way type of communication.
I don't know if that would effect Hibernation, but I would
configure the port to Epp or ECP anyway.

When you say the system will not hibernate, do you mean a timed hibernate or forced via key combo or lid event? If timed, then it is most likely because of the communication between the printer and the system causing the timer to reset. Therefore the time to hibernate never truly passes because the system is never "idle" long enough. Not being familiar with that printer, is there any setting(s) to turn off any monitoring of the printer via the HP driver?

Hibernation doesn't work at all when the HP package has
been installed. Forced or timed.. The HP driver is
useless.. I've checked.. :(

Thanks

I've checked the bios. The port is currently set to ECP.
As far as I know, there should be no problem with that
setting. Before reinstalling xp the only thing I can thnk
to do is check .DLL versions and installed updates between
the two computers..

I doubt it will turn much of anything up but I am at a
complete loss..
