Andre DeLemarre

I have XP pro +sp2 +all updates.
I was obliged to reinstall windows with MY CDRom and lost the function
hibernate.
Lost also all the functions to turn off monitor/hard disk after 5 /10
minutes whatsoever
I read all kind of info coming from different forums but so far no succes.
Will be very obliged if someone can give me some clue.TIA

How do you mean you "lost" ? If you go into Control Panel are you able
to access the functionality inside the Power Options ?

I have now only two possibilities in control panel/power option :
turn off monitor and hard disks and even these two options did not work.
Thanks for your input

Do you have a hibernate tab in Power Options?

If no, check that the correct HAL was installed for your system. To do this
open Device Manager and check what is listed for "Computer." The
description should show one of the computer types that encompasses the
ability to hibernate. The only way that I know of to "upgrade" the HAL is
to reinstall Windows. Be sure that Power Options is enabled in the BIOS
settings before doing this.

If yes, the correct HAL was installed for your system's architecture so the
challenge is figuring out why the system won't hibernate. There are two
possible causes - running programs that register an "active" state thereby
keeping hibernate out of reach and incompatible drivers. One or the other
or a combination of both can cause hibernate to fail.

Driver updates and possibly BIOS updates can help resolve problems with the
hardware side. The software side requires going over the system with a fine
tooth comb - figuring out what processes are always present when the system
fails to go into hibernation. Troubleshooting is a process of elimination -
a clean boot to see if hibernate returns. Then adding items back one at a
time. When hibernation fails, the last item added is either the cause or
contributes to the cause that stymies hibernation.

If this is a mobile system (laptop or other portable PC), strongly suggest
working closely with the OEM. Preservation of battery life depends on
standby and hibernate working correctly. OEMs go to great lengths to
deliver system with hardware/software configurations that can accomplish
those states.

the

Before you do all that, Power Properties->Hibernate tab->Enable hibernation
checkbox.

If that was what you needed, you probably figured it out from the mention
of the Hibernate tab.

I answer to your different questions.
I don't have hibernate on my power options. If I check UPS it is mentionned
currently stopped.Went to the site winupgrade.apcc.com to try to upgrade
without succes.
I check the hal.dll 3 entries one in sytem32 the 2 others drive cache/i386.
Try to perform a clean boot with the 3 sites indicated without succes.
I reinstall widows XP with SP2 and get the same negative result. It seems the
problem is in the system ini file.
Thanks anyway for all your time and explanations.I will continue my research
and will inform you if I succeed.

one more action I did not perform.

Hello Andre!

How to access BIOS varies from one computer to the next. It always involves
pressing a key or a combination of keys when the system first starts up.
You need to find out *which* key or keys are the right ones for your
system. For example: On my system, pressing the DEL key during POST (before
Windows starts to load), is what opens my BIOS menus.

Once you get into BIOS, the available menus are different from one system
to the next so I can't give you exact directions here either. Basically,
you're looking for "power management" or "power options" menus where you
can enable or disable these features. When you enable, there are usually
more choices involved. The menus are pretty self-explanatory once you find
them but if in doubt, check your system's documentation for a description
of each setting.

You answered in your other post that you do not have a Hibernate tab in the
Windows' Power Options control panel applet. Do you have an APM tab? If
yes, enable "APM" there.

Ok I find the BIOS yesterday but i did not yet check the power option.
I am going to go slowly because the bios is a very sensitive issue and I
don't want to make a big mistake.
I don't have an APM tab in the power option.
I have only a power scheme with 2 options turn off monitor and hard
disk, then in advanced a mention to power button : when I press the power
button on my computer Shut Down, and then the tab UPS with Uninterruptible
Power supply,in details Manufacturer American power conversion and a big
exclamation mark in yellow color with UPS service is currently stopped. If I
click on about I have Developed for Microsoft by American Power Conversion
version 1.0 and the possibility to have info with the site
winupgrade.apcc.com.I went on this site which is very complicated for me.
Many thanks for your explanations

Andre, while you're going slowly with BIOS options, let's backtrack for a
few steps.

All of the Power Options in Control Panel do not show up for limited users.
You need to log on with an account in the Administrative group to access
all that is available in the power options category.

Did you check in Device Manager yet for computer type? To do this, right
click My Computer and choose Properties. On the Hardware page of System
Properties, click the button for Device Manager. On the next screen, you
should see "Computer" with a "+" next to it. Click the "+" to expand the
category. What description do you see listed under Computer?

I am the computer administrator and the only one,the guest account is
disabled.
Device Manager /my computer/expand ACPI Uniprocessor PC
If I click properties Driver Type Computer
manufacturer standard computer
location unknown
the driver is working properly
Tab driver driver provider Microsoft
date 7/1/2001
version 5/1/2600.
sign microsoft Windows publisher
If I try to click update the wizard tell me that I have the best....
driver details C:\windows\system32\hal.dll

ntkmlpa.exe
ntoskml.exe
File version 5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm_040803_2158
Tab details ROOT\ACPI_hal\0000
Hope you can find a clue.
I also should say that I lost all sound except a bleep at certain moments
regards andre

I check my BIOS and APM is enabled.
I check also the hal.dll and find 3 entries
one in system 32 5.1.2600.2180 128 kb
the two others one in driver cache\i386\driver.cabs with 101 kb and the
second in driver cache i386\sp2.cab with 103 kb

I am the computer administrator and the only one,the guest account is
disabled.
Device Manager /my computer/expand ACPI Uniprocessor PC
If I click properties Driver Type Computer
manufacturer standard computer
location unknown

Andre, this tells me that Windows recognizes your system as an ACPI
computer. So we don't have to worry about the wrong hal.dll being
installed.

The BIOS setting confirms what we can already see in Device Manager. The
multiple copies of hal.dll are of no concern. You are logged on with an
account in the administrator group. These are all requirements to get the
Standby/Hibernate options available in the Windows Power Options control
panel applet. But for some reason, they're not appearing for you.

Some reasons why they may not appear:
-System is a member of a domain. No hibernate option is normal with this
configuration. However, from your description, this is not the case with
your setup.

-A third party tool is used to manage standby/hibernate. An extra icon in
Control Panel is commonly seen on laptops. It does not sound like this is
the case for you either.

-Virtual memory turned off: Use System Properties> Advanced> Performance>
Advanced> Virtual Memory> Change: set to let Windows manage.

-Not enough space on the hard drive for the hiberfil.sys file.

Check the properties of your hard drive to see if it is close to full. If
it is, you'll need to restore space for the file to be created. Do this by
uninstalling programs that you do not use. Move copies of old data onto CDs
and delete the hard drive copies once you've confirmed the move was
successful and that the data on the CD is intact. General cleanup - get rid
of old data files that you no longer need or want.

A note about deleting: If you have the Norton Protected Bin installed,
clearing the recycle bin usually moves files to the protected bin. Empty
the protected bin too.

-You have a large amount of RAM installed. Performance of hibernate with
2GB of RAM or more is poor so the hibernate option is not available.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;888575

-Your system failed to resume properly from hibernate a number of times.
Windows will automatically disable hibernate to protect the system. No way
that I know of to fix this short of a clean reinstall. (There may be other
ways, I just don't what they are.)

If still no luck, I'm afraid that you're at a point where you need to talk
to tech support for your system as we've exhausted all of the more common
reasons for Power Options to be missing. The only ones left would be
reasons that are directly related to your system.

attention Sharon
I am not member of any domain
No third party tool and my computer is a PC
Hard drive property use is 3.30 GB and I have 24.6 GB of free space
virtual memory,if I click change I don't have :set to let windows manage but
paging file for C space available 25953 MB
customer size tick initial size 720
maximum size 1440
total paging size for all drivers minimum allowed 2 MB

recommended 717 MB
ccurrently allowed 720 MB
No Norton protection installed
OK I will continue my research, contact the manufacturer and revert to you as
sonn I find a solution.
Thanks again for all your time
