Hibernation in WinXP

I just assembled a new computer; everything is running
fine. I enabled hibernation in the power options control
panel applet, yet the only options that appear in the
shut down splash screen (xp-style one, not the combo box)
are stand by, shut down, and restart. How do I add
hibernate as an option?

Thanks,

Jake

Hi,

Usually you hit the <shift> key. See:

After clicking Start> Shutdown, press Shift. The Standby button will change
to Hibernate. If that seems like too much trouble, check out the settings
in Power Options> Advanced. You can use the settings here to assign
"hibernate" to the standby key or the power button.

Be cautious about using the power button option. You do not want to
hibernate, install new hardware and restart the computer. New hardware
installations should be done after a true shutdown so that they are
properly detected at startup. You don't want a restore from hibernate
attempting to load an outdated system state during this process.

Man, MS knowledge base search tool stinks. I searched
hard for that article and came up empty handed... sigh

P.S. I know enough not to install hardware while a
machine is hibernating.

Sorry if I repeated something you already knew, Jake. Since this is the
basics group and many users read threads to learn, I added that info. Hope
I didn't offend you by including it.
