hibernation and the inactivity timer

i am using windows xp home, on a custom built, desktop pc configuration. i
have the asus a8v motherboard with an amd athalon 64 fx57 cpu and one stick
of kingston 1gb ram. my system is set up on a 30gb western digital sata
raptor harddisk.

i use the hibernation feature quite a bit, so i can instantly return to my
work. ive noticed though that if i come to the computer, turn it on from
hibernation, and step away for a few minutes, when i come back the computer
is off. i know no one has come and shut it off behind me. i dont have my bios
set to turn the computer on or off at specific times. and, on the power
options properties page, while i have hibernation enabled, and it works fine,
i also do not have a timer set for the system to hibernate, in the 'System
hibernates' field. i have that set to 'never'. the only thing i have set on a
timer, is turning off my hard disks. -at 10 minutes.

now, i am only wondering here, how i can fix the computer and keep it from
turning itself off, after occasionally stepping away for a few minutes from
the initial power on? if i go away for a minute, come back and do some work
on the computer, and step away again, the computer remains on indefinitely.
-whats the difference there?

ive also read the microsoft knowledge base article, 318355, at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318355/en-us . there is no fix listed in this
article. does that mean that theres nothing i can do? im not using a laptop
and nor do i have worry of batteries being discharged. my computer is plugged
into a regular power outlet. is there anyway to manually set the Inactivity
TImer, or just turn it off, so these things stop happening?

thank you

By design so to speak. Use it if you wake it up, is the solution.

well bob, specifically speaking, is it at all possible to edit the variables
pertaining to the Inactivity Timer? is there a file i can edit or create?
some setting in the registry editor, or even in my bios that i can modify?

thanks

It wouldn't be the BIOS, at best I would hazard a guess that it is hard
coded into a file somewhere.
