My computer will not hibernate and doesn't have a option to standby. Can
anyone give me a list of things to check(drivers, programs etc) that might be
preventing it. I have it checked in power options but I just get a black
screen and have to turn it back on and then off again.

Hi!
WinXP (and Win2000) use and implement a later version of
ACPI than
9X families. The Standby and Hibernate features
depend on ACPI. If the
Standby feature is missing, it means XP thinks your BIOS
is not fully
ACPI compatible, and during installation installed
the "Standard PC
HAL" which does not include the Standby option.

Upgrade your motherboard BIOS to an ACPI compliant one
and
do a repair install of XP.

Annette, your problem is very common. Video drivers are known to interfere
with power management functions like Hibernation and Standby. If you
downloaded any recently, perhaps in an MS update, this could be the source
of your problem.
Maureen Goldman recommends updating and reinstalling your video drivers. Mr.
Sengupta says: "Incompatible video drivers prevent these (power management)
features from working. The built-in VGA driver, for example, is a bare-bones
driver that doesn’t support power management."
