hibernate and standby don't get activated

i've set up stuff correctly and the system won't go into
standby or hibernate. i can hit the power button and make
it hibernate or select "start - > shutdown -> standby",
but the computer won't do it automatically if i set it up
do it automatically in the Power Options dialog. ideas?

thanks! i ended up killing a bunch of services and slowly
added them back until it worked. also turns out that after
a fresh boot, i need to open & close one folder before it
works. go figure...
