Well, sounds like you have a bunch of spyware parasites running in the
background. Go get these free utilities and clean up your system. Make sure
you also get a Firewall and Virus protection,

AVG FREE: (Virus Protection) http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5

as I'm assuming you might not have either. Defrag in Administrator "Safe
Mode", and even run these programs in safe mode, first. Be sure to keep
up-dating Adaware & Spybot before you run them.

ADAWARE : http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

SPYBOT : http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

WINDOWS CLEANUP:

http://www.stevengould.org/software/cleanup/download.html

CCLEANER : http://www.ccleaner.com/

CWSHREDDER.EXE
http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html

STARTUP INSPECTOR: http://www.windowsstartup.com/

This program gives you an informed look at startup items and lets you decide
what to dump. Too many unnecessary startups will also slow your system.

Startup items can be a problem dependant upon what they are and do.. it is
not the number of startup items that is important so much as the loading
that each one places on the system..

How to make a good newsgroup post:
http://www.dts-l.org/goodpost.htm

This will show you the kind of detail you need to include in order to
get accurate and focused troubleshooting. Saying "have tried all the
usual" isn't useful.

In the meantime, make sure your computer is 100% virus/malware-free:

The advice given to your by Pentium is all good.. ensure that you run the
antispyware in Safe Mode.. it seems to be more effective..

Re the processes.. we all have many processes listed, but you will note that
they are not all running.. see what the spyware removal programs achieve
before stopping arbitrary processes..

You can't just state "i have tried all the usual stuff but to no avail?"

What does that mean ? Tried what ?

For non-viral malware...

Please download, install and update the following software...

Ad-aware SE v1.06
http://www.lavasoft.de/
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

SpyBot Search and Destroy v1.4
http://security.kolla.de/

After the software is updated, I suggest scanning the system in Safe Mode.

I also suggest downloading, installing and updating BHODemon for any Browser Helper Objects
that may be on the PC.

BHODemon
http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm

For viral malware...

Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

It is a self-extracting ZIP file that contains the Kixtart Script Interpreter {
http://kixtart.org Kixtart is CareWare } 4 batch files, 6 Kixtart scripts, one Link
(.LNK) file, a PDF instruction file and two utilities; UNZIP.EXE and WGET.EXE. It will
simplify the process of using; Sophos, Trend, Kaspersky and McAfee Anti Virus Command
Line Scanners to remove viruses, Trojans and various other malware.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file.

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

When you get the task list up have you tried clicking on the CPU column
heading to put things in usage order (one click puts it ascending, a second
click descending etc) to see where the CPU is being used most?

Any task up there at the top (except system idle process) might give a clue
as to what it is. If it's a meaningless name then you can try a search for
some part of that name and see if an executable shows up in a folder that
you recognize. These are only clues and not always reliable but sure seems
like you have something slowing you down badly, it may just be that obvious
when you know where to look.

Not based upon the complete lack of usable information you've
provided. For instance, what do *you* mean by ".... tried all the usual
stuff...?" Nor have you even told us what you consider to be slow, or
if the machine ever performed differently. No one can help if you don't
provide at least a modicum of information.
