There are three kinds of PCI slot, PCI, PCI-X, and PCI Express.

Your board most likely has PCI slots, but _may_, especially if it's a server
or workstation board, have one or more PCI-X slots. If it's a PIII 1 GHz
it won't have PCI Express.

A PCI-X slot will usually take a PCI board--the slot is longer though so
some boards may physically not fit in it.

Usually a PCI-X board will also work in a PCI slot, but some may not fit
physically on some motherboards--the PCI-X connector is longer and the bit
that doesn't fit in the slot may hit components on the motherboard, and
some just plain don't recognize standard PCI--it's rare to see a PCI-X
video board though, so this is pretty much a non-issue.

PCI Express is a totally different animal--it's only real relation to PCI is
that it was designed by the same committee. PCI Express is the new
standard for video boards and PCI Express boards, which you will find on
the shelves at most stores selling computer componets, will _not_ fit or
work in either a PCI or PCI-X slot.

I'm surprised to hear that, since I just got a ASUS SLI mobo with 2 PCI-X
slots, but I'm still using an old video card. It seems the slots are
intended for video cards specifically. Is PCI-X common only for SLI
boards?

I took another look at the manual. They are PCI Express. Damn
abbreviations are too similar! :)
