Strictly speaking, it's the font *file* that's copyright. It's a quirk of
legal history that there's no copyright in a typeface design (which is one
reason there are so many versions of the common ones). But a font *file* is
deemed to be software, and has copyright protection as such.
The font name can also be trademarked even though the outlines can't be
copyrighted.
