I installed System Mechanic Professional 6 on my computer last month. After testing "Manage Running Programs", it said my mprexe.exe was not a
Microsoft file but the "Opaserv.T virus". I tried my antivirus which did not
find any infection (Avast). Also tried Norton, Panda, and iolo, all came up
with the same results as Avast. I also tried replacing mprexe with my
Win98SE disk, and ended up with SMP6 reporting that I had to of the same
files infected. Since I can't get any antivirus to remove this virus.
Can anybody help me remove this VIRUS? I'm running Win98SE, IE6 P866,
512 ram.

mprexe.exe is a process which is initiated by Microsoft Windows 9x and ME only. It allows the computer to use multiple network protocols, and network adapters by routing between both. This hidden process will only appear in the Windows task list should there be a problem with it. Otherwise it should be left enabled.
... System Mechanic Professional 6 could be mistaken and reporting a false positive.

Thank you Muckshifter!!
You might be right about a false positive after reading the MS link you posted. I have not had any error messages popping at start up or any other time. My computer works well except for running out of memory in a very
short time of usage. That's why I was checking to see what was burning so much ram.

While Win98 made great improvements in memory management over Win95, it is still regarded as a bit bugger until MS issued a 'fix' for systems using 512Mb of ram or more. I would suggest an experiment if you have two sticks of ram, that is, remove one and try with 256Mb ... the "sweet-spot" for Win98/SE was 256Mb ram, anymore was considered 'wasted' ram.

There are a few myths which are associated with Win98/SE that were drawn from Win95 experience ... the bottom line was, let Windows handle your memory management especially in Win98SE. I'm specifically talking about VCache here. ;) You err, haven't been tempted to mess with this, have you ?

A VCache maximum of 524,288 KB (or a little less) is recommended. This is obtained by adding a MaxFileCache=x entry in the [vcache] section of SYSTEM.INI, where x is the maximum value you wish to set.

Win98/SE does suffer the same fate of 95 in that it still has, what was commonly called Win-Alzheimer's, in leaking memory ... see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/278368 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q242161/ as an example. NOTE: only apply these 'fixes' if they DO apply to you.

... good luck with that too. ;)
