I cannot boot to windows i recive an error my hal.dll file is missing, I try
to do the recovery thing with the cd. so i type bootcfg /list and nothing
comes up i do bootcfg /rebuild and it says to do chkdsk i do that it says i
have one more more unrecoverable problems and to type /p but when i do that
it says invalid command

I'm still having a problem. now when i try to reinstall windows it says i
need windows 95 or 98 to continue the install....

1. Download a hard drive diagnostic utility from the drive mftr.'s website.
You will create a bootable cd/floppy with this file. Boot with the media
you created and do a thorough test. If the hard drive fails any physical
tests, replace it. Obviously you will need to get the utility and create it
on a working computer. Do this first; there is no point in trying to
install Windows on a faulty hard drive.

2. You apparently have an upgrade version of XP. You will need to provide
qualifying media - the install cd for a previous operating system - in
order to use the upgrade.

f the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a professional computer repair
shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA).

Reinstalling isn't going to help if there are problems with the drive.
Download a drive diagnostic utility from the drive manufacturer's web site.
That will create a bootable floppy or CD. Boot from that and run the
diagnostics.
