Help with XP Pro

D

Doggard

I have a problem I would like to be looked at.

I recently installed Windows XP Pro on my Athlon 2600+ XP with 333Mhz Front
Bus DDR 512 Mb 333Mhz
NVIDIA Gforce 440 MMX 64Mb DDR
MoBoard GA-7VAX-A
A home built Wonder ;-)
Anyway I recently installed Windows XP Professional Pluse

I formatted the harddrive, used FDISK to Delete the active partition and
then Restarted using the Win XP Pro Pluse in the CD rom drive...
After the install finished which took 3 Hours. and Two Bad Files (which did
not seem to Matter it Runns Fine)

I then set about reinstalling all my Software and Games.....
uppon starting to install UT 2003 I found that it was installing on my Zip
drive [C:] I was assuming this was my Maxor 80Gb IDE harddrive that I
baught....
enyway I then set about trying to Give the HDD the letter of C which I knew
from Win 98SE as using the HDD tools to reorder the drives
It was like this before I started.......

1. A: 3 1/4
2. C: omiga Zip 250
3. D: CD
4. E: CDRW
5. F: Maxor

I wanted to put my Startup Boot disk as C: and my Omiga Zip 250 as the end
at F:

2. C: Maxor 80Gb
3. D: CDRW
4. E: CD
5. F: Omiga Zip 250

However the System and the Instructions say you Cannot change the Boot or
Startup disk Volume Letter in Windows......
So I tryed opening a DOS Window and doing it using DISKPART
I used
select Volume C:

Then

assign letter G: (taking into account what I knew from having simaler
problems on win 98SE)
You could get around windows being active by assigning another letter to the
Drive and then putting the one you wanted in its place..

Is there no way around quitting windows and using some sort of Minamal
system? Will I have to use Diskpart in True Dos mode in order to get the
Drives the way I want??
Can you even make a boot disk with DISKPART on it so you can fix this
problem....

I would appreciate a speedy Reply

Start over again, this time only connect the HDD to primary master and CDROM
as secondary master. Make sure the BIOS is set to boot from CD, put XP cd in
drive and follow instructions on screen, ie, partition size, file system etc.
then start installing other hardware one by one.
Install AV / FW software and update windows. Then you can think about
installing applications and games.

I did update and install All my Drivers and bits and peaces before
and the Primary master is the HDD and the Primary Slave is CD
and the Secondary Master is the CDRW......
this is what Freaks me............
The Hardware Is setup CORRECTLY I even Reset the CMOS to help avoid
problems........

I have tryed installing Win XP with nothing but the Keyboard, Mouse and
LAN plugged in and then downloaded updates from MS update and
everything...... Almost the same proceadure as installing Windows 98SE.
I will however Double Check My Hardware AGAIN to make sure but I am sure
that is not the problem......

thankyou for your suggestion and Input.....

This is a known problem.

Sometimes when a system has a Zip drive, Windows thinks it's a hard drive
and will install itself to the zip drive and as drive c:.

The cure is to remove the Zip drive from the system temporarily (I usually
just unplug the data cable and the power cable) , then do a completely fresh
install of XP.

Once XP is installed, then go back and re-install the Zip drive.

I've run into this same problem several times.
