Ken,

Did this happen after installing updates from Windows Update? See this Topic
for more information:

Yes it did and I also can not access windows update. looks like you have to
pay in order to get the solution are there any other sites?

Ken

No need to pay for the solution. The following answer was accepted in that
link. You can view it from there, as well.

OK, thanks for the info. I just googled for "uninstall KB896688", found a
number of pages referencing this (apparently many people seem to have
encountered various problems after that patch), and the only way they say
that users were able to uninstall it is by using Add/Remove Programs in
Control Panel.

"Ramesh,

I uninstall the KB896688 patch and that did not fix the problem, so I went
back to uninstall and removed all of the updates that where install on
10-18-05
and now my computer is working like it is suppose to. Now what do I do when
windows wants me to reinstall the patches?

Thanks,
Ken

Ken,

I'd test and determine which particular update causes that. This is of
course, a trial and error. Once determined, leave that particular hotfix
out, and make sure that you install the other critical updates for your
security. Also, post the hotfix # here that has caused the problem for you.

If you want to stop automatic installation of the fixes using AU, you can
configure it to notify (but not download automatically). See:

How to configure and use Automatic Updates in Windows XP:

Ranesh,

Thanks for the help I will reinstall the patches one at a time and I will
keep track of the one that is causing the problems and I will post it here.

Thanks,
Ken

Ranesh,

After installing all eight of the patches the one that is causing the
problem is the KB896688 it causes problems with Internet Explorer and with
the user accounts. Now what, I assume that Microsoft knows about this our
should I contact them? our can you?

Thanks,
Ken

Ken,

It's KB896688 as I said in my first post. I've seen numerous such cases all
caused after installation of KB896688 update. I don't have a solution right
now. It would be a good idea to monitor the Windowsupdate newsgroup to learn
if there are any workarounds posted there.

I think I got it. See:

Hello Ramesh,

I contacted Microsoft and they just sent me a reply I will see if it works
and I will let you know the results.

Ken

From your description, I understand that after installing the update
KB896688, the following issues have been encountered.

1. The user account does not work properly.

2. The ActiveX controllers in Internet Explorer do not work properly.

3. The computer hangs on the Windows Update website.

I am sorry to hear about the inconvenience you are experiencing. Please be
assured that I will try my best to help you troubleshoot the issue. However,
if I have misunderstood your concern, please feel free to correct me.

Since there are too many different hardware and software environments, we
can not guarantee all the updates provided by Microsoft will work on all
system platforms without any problem.

Please understand that the update KB896688 is a cumulative update for
Internet Explorer. This kind of the update will be replaced by the next
cumulative update for Internet Explorer. Since our original issue may occur
if the update is not fully compatible with some third-party programs
installed on the computer, in order that we are able to use the computer
without any problem, I suggest we temporarily delay the installation of the
update.

I will also transfer this issue to our Research Team for further research.
Please be assured that if there is any update, you will be informed
immediately.

Based on the current situation, let us perform the following steps to
troubleshoot the issue.

1. Click Start, click Run, type "regsvr32 ole32.dll" (without
quotation marks) in the Open box, and then click OK.

2. Click Start, click Run, type "notepad C:\register.reg" (without
quotation marks) in the Open box, and then click OK. Choose Yes when you are
prompted.

3. Copy the following texts and then paste them into the opened
Notepad window:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\CLSID]

@="{0000031A-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}"

4. After you paste the above commands, please close the Notepad
window. Choose Yes when you are prompted to save the file.

5. Click Start, click Run, type "C:\register.reg" (without quotation
marks) and press Enter to run the commands we have pasted.

6. Restart the computer and check the issue again.
