Hey there guys,

Recently, it seems like i got a spyware on my computer. It keeps on giving
me popups and a security warning that TELLS me I have a spyware on my
computer and should immediately download one of the anti-spyware softwares
from this site: http://www.hwgate.com/gatevc.php?id=icn02.

I was using a programme called Dr.Web to block out spyware and viruses, but
somehow this one got through. Dr.Web spots the spyware and tells me that I
have atleast 1 infected item on my computer, but it doesnt seem to be able to
get rid of it.

I then downloaded Windows Live OneCare. It tells me that the spyware is:

Win32/WebDir

Yet, it cant delete it. Anyone else had this problem with this piece of
spyware? Does anyone know any other anti-spyware programme and any steps I
can take to protect my PC? Btw, I am working as an administrator on my
computer...please help me out. Your support is VERY much appreciated.

Thanks,

Akash

To find and/or deal with issues caused by any sort of "adware" and/or
"spyware," such as Gator, Comet Cursors, Xupiter, Bonzai Buddy, or KaZaA,
and their remnants, that you've deliberately (but without understanding the
consequences) installed, two products that are quite effective (at finding
and removing this type of scumware) are Ad-Aware from www.lavasoft.de and
SpyBot Search & Destroy from www.safer-networking.org/. Both have free
versions. It's even possible to use SpyBot Search & Destroy to "immunize"
your system against most future intrusions.

Additionally, manual removal instructions for the most common varieties
of scumware are available here:

It's probably a trick to get you to download another spyware installer,
don't fall
for it!

Dr. Web may or not be legitimate but if it can't delete spyware it's like a
Doctor that can't diagnose a disease.

If it can't delete it, it's worthless or it could be a spyware installer.
There's a published list of anti-spywares that are the opposite of what they
claim to be!, that list is kept up to date, and should be checked before you
install any program that claims to an anti-spyware.

To uninstall hard to uninstall programs, you first have to disable it and
delete it as follows:
Go to Start\Run\and type; "msconfig" (w/o quotation marks) and press
Enter\go to Start tab, and check which startup programs have a check mark,
there should only be a few; the antivirus, office, messenger, and any other
program you may have set to run at bootup, uncheck other suspicious or
unknown programs and particularly if you ID it as one of the malicious
programs you may have installed... next go to the registry; Start\Run\type;
regedit and hit enter, and go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

To delete malicious registry values, use the same criteria as in msconfig:

Normal values are; the default alphanumeric value, the antivirus value,
messenger, ctfmon, and office values and they could be distributed in both
HKLM and HKCU keys,.. delete any suspicious or malicious value.

Next download and scan only with legitimate and recommended anti-spyware
applications and scan with online antivirus if you susspect a virus
infection.
Recommended anti-spywares are: Adaware SE, Spybot Search & Destroy,
CWShredder and The Cleaner. And to block spyware use SpywareBlaster and as
last resort, for difficult spyware, use HijackThis... use this program with
"Do a System scan and save a logfile" which you need to post in the
appropriate forum to seek help in identifying the results.

To keep an eye on CPU usage or if problems persist, install Process Monitor
or Process Explorer, it's useful to see which applications, versions, dlls,
etc. make your CPU run high.. since it is a characteristic of infections to
use up CPU memory any of these programs becomes very useful.

Download process software.
