Hi,

I have XP Pro and want to set up..

2 IDE hard drives (1 master - 1 slave) and
4 IDE Cd Roms

I have a PCI Controller which will take at least 2 IDEs.

Is there a configuration which will work better? Say,

2 HDs on Primary as Master and Slave
2 Cdroms on Secondary as Master and Slave
2 Cdroms on Controller as Master Slave

I want to use the set up to record on multiple drives with Nero which
allows this.

Use the PCI Controller Card for the hard drives. The IDE controllers on
the Motherboard for the cdrom drives.

Thanks.

Is it best to have the 2 HDs on the Controller on the one channel as
Master and Slave or on two channels both as Master?

Just thinking of thru put speed etc.

I'd put both HDs on the same channel as Master/Slave and the CDROMs on the
other channel was Master/Slave. That's how I've had it set up before...

Just a suggestion,

If speed is important to you then I suggest that you run a little test
yourself instead of relying on unsubstantiated hearsay. Here is what I would
do:
1. Download the stopwatch tool timethis.exe from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...CD-7026-4143-AE85-1F5E096F9BE0&displaylang=en.
2. Save it in c:\Windows
3. Find a large file, e.g. an Outlook .pst file. Close Outlook before
continuing!
4. Copy the file to c:\.
5. Rename it to big.bin.
6. Click Start / Run
7. Type the three letters cmd
8. Click OK. You are now at the Command Prompt.
9. Type this command:
timethis c:\big.bin d:\
10. Make a note of the time it took to copy the file.

Now repeat the above test for different master/slave configurations. Make
sure you do this *each time* before performing Step 9:
- Delete the target file d:\big.bin if it exists.
- Reboot the machine (to prevent disk caching from interfering with the copy
process).

Thank you all.

I have tried a few things and will now try this option as soon as I get
time.

Happy New Year
