Defrag.exe is stalling at 10%, reports "drive content changed" and
refuses to defrag c: partition. Ok before this. I thoroughly checked the
hard disk drive and there's nothing wrong with it AFAICT. I erven tried
defragging in Safe Mode with the same negative result.

Can anyone recommend either a good freeware replacement for MS
defrag.exe or think of a solution as to why it's suddenly refuses to
work.(I Ghost-ed back to a week ago and it kind of works now -- stalls
for about a minute at 10% mark before continuing. But i really need to
get this problem sorted out with the C: drive the way it should be.)

Control\Alt\Del and stop everything Except Explorer, and Systray.
Then do your defrag.

Try ScanDefrag in Restrictive Mode, download it from either
of two locations:
http://home.earthlink.net/~bblanton2/scandefrag/main.htm
or http://www.blueorbsoft.com/scandefrag/index.html
It was developed for problems like you have, see the Readme
for more information.

Something is running in the background that is causing it to restart over and over.

Hi!

Start 98 with F5, protected mode. Start a cli and type: chkdsk /f
Restart windows, again with F5. Type in a cli scandisk /all

Be sure you are on C:\ (typing c: in a cli and then return)

Best Regards,

Daniel Mandic

I've no idea what your knowledge level is. Just in case you might not
be familiar with it, one should set power down settings to never before
defrag, otherwise this happens.

Wintop will show you what processes are running.

Hi to all - Wow! Great input and many thanks to all.

I'm now in the stage where it will defrag C: partition. BUT it pauses
for about a minute or more consistently at 10% before moving on to
complete. It does this with the ME version of defrag.exe (thanks
Wolfgang and jmatt!). So *better*, but still a bit of a cliff-hanger at
the 10% mark. Closing down other programs doesn't affect this :-(

You may have a corrupt file, from Windows Explorer, Delete all the
files ( except the read only file ) in Windows > Applog. Taskmon will
rebuild the Applog file.

If you have plenty of memory, disable Taskmon.
Start > Run, type in msconfig & press Enter.
Click on Startup & untick TaskMonitor.

To view Applog, do this.
Windows Explorer > View > Folder Options > View, click on Show all
files. Click Apply & OK.
http://www.windows-help.net/windows98/start-17.shtml

Deletes entries in cookies, applog, history, temporary internet files,
and temp which may cause defrag to hang.

A pause at 10% is 'normal', even with ME defrag. At this point the
disk has been read and defrag is determining the best sequence to
rearrange data.

If you would like a more technical explanation ask in the
microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion NG.

With my older PC, which used 98Lite in installing win98SE, this issue
never arose.Defrag was quick with no hangs. This new and much faster
spec PC had win98SE installed without 98lite. Even with defrag (ME)and
ignoring the 10% (normal it seems, hang) it still takes much longer than
on the old PC. Still as long as it works...

Windows 98 rearranges the most used files so they start faster, it does this
at around the 10% mark, once this is done it proceeds much faster, to
prevent this click on defrag from the start menu (not from tools on drive
properties), select options from defrag screen (not detailed screen),
deselect rearrange files and save settings, it will run much faster like in
95, this is from memory so not exact but you should be able to follow it.

A happy ending: disabled Taskmon using msconfig. Then, installed 98lite
(v4.7) posthumously (so to speak). Got rid of some MS crud under "Take
Control" option of 98Lite. It's a non-standard order to do things, i
know, especially as I've already done the (Mdgx's IIRC) win98se
unofficial service pack upgrade. Still it's got rid of the 10% hang,
defrags faster, and boots faster. Seems ok. I kept IE, as i'm pretty
sure I have some apps that use it. Thanks to all for assistance :-)

Thanks. Since running 98lite I managed to get rid of "winalign". This
hidden goodie or nastie (depending one one's point of view) optimises
hard disk for MS and Intel stuff. I gave it the heave-ho and now no
pauses at 10% and *much* faster defrag.

How do you reach chm files after running 98lite?
