Help with crash following diagnostic startup

E

ECLiPSE 2002

My daughter ran her XP Home ed. pc in diagnostic startup and when she
rebooted she could not open MS IE and Outlook Express, her antivirus
utility and device manager among others. She then tried System Restore
but all restore points were lost. Also tried starting in Safe Mode, and
Normal Startup but that didn't work either.

She contacted Compaq tech support and all of their suggestions failed
to restore the pc to its original operation, e.g., return to normal
startup, selective startup, unplug everything and reconnect, create a
new account, SFC\Scannow, return to last good configuration that
worked, etc.

Short of doing a complete reformat and install of Compaq's restore
disk can anyone suggest what may be causing this problem and what can
be done to remedy it?

Any input would be appreciated,

Frank
