Help with Boot failure

My Laptop running Windows XP Home (pentiumIII mobile)
suddenly will not boot (hadn't even made any changes to
my system).

I can get to the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" where I
can select Boot to "SafeMode", but when I do this the
boot always fails with the last line reading:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows\System32
\Drivers\BATTC.SYS

TWO questions:
1) Does this mean that the BATTC.SYS file is
corrupt, or is the corrupt file the one which comes
after battc.sys whose name hasn't been displayed yet?
2) How do I get my system booted so I can replace
the corrupt file? You see if I boot from a floppy
(created using WinXP), it will not recognize the C:\
drive on my laptop !!!??? BTW, The same thing happens
(won't recognize c: drive) when I boot my main computer
(Athlon XP) running Windows XP Pro using the same floppy
(except for modified boot.ini). I even tried copying the
files ntldr, ntdetect.com, and boot.ini (hopefully
modified correctly) onto the boot disk without any
improvement.
