Have broadband AOL 9 optimized using with cox cable connection.
The cable connection also has IE 6
Using 2 gig clockspeed PC with XP.

My problem is that whenever I log on to AOL it freezes up within the
first few minutes of usage.

Cox's IE 6 browser works flawlessly.

The problem only occurs when I log on to AOL The freeze ups always
result in having to shut down my PC by turning off the PC's on off
switch, and start all over again. This problem only affects my AOL
software on my desktop. No problems on my laptop.

I have gone thru AOL tech support numerous times, eliminating all
their usual suspected problems, and have even uninstalled and
reinstalled AOL.

Now I am faced with the prospect of having to clean install XP by
reformatting my HD.

Any possible solutions before I'm forced to resort to the dreaded
reformat process????

Thank you very much for any help!

Since everything is working but the AOL software, wouldn't it make more
sense to repair that program? If repairs aren't working on it, try a
reinstall to a new folder, test. If the new install works better than the
old one, use the AOL uninstall feature (which will lists all instances of
AOL installed on the system) in Add/Remove to get rid of the unwanted
installation.

NOTE: If installing from an AOL CD, you might want to try downloading a
setup file and installing that instead. The setup files available on line
are usually more current than the ones on the CDs.

PS: I have AOL8 Plus on my XP desktop (won't let it near my tablet PC) and
do not have any problems running it on XP/SP2.

I agree with Sharon up to a certain point of reinstalling AOL9.0
I would complete drop AOL and use your COX cable with IE since that is
working correctly. Why pay for two services when one will do?

I suggest a Repair Install first. You can always do a clean install as a
last resort.

Solution follows: -

1) Take the AOHELL CD

2) If you are old enough to drive, and have a licence, place it in the
middle of the drive and back over it several times.

3) If you are not old enough to drive - or don't have a licence - place
said CD in the microwave and cook on full power for a couple of minutes - it
really is fascinating, and most satisfying, to watch.

4) Place resulting mess in the rubbish

5) Pick up the phone, call AOHELL 'Customer Service' and tell them you
wish to cancel your account. Don't, however tempting it might be, let them
persuade you to stay with offers of 'free' months.

6) Ask people for recommendations for a proper ISP.

7) Call new ISP of choice and sign up.

There! Problem solved.

Unfortunately, removing AOHELL's trojanic software will, most likely,
require a complete format and reinstall.

Tick, you could drive at your IQ and never get a ticket (even in a school
zone).

AOL is the single most despicable virus one can install on any computer.
Not to mention that it will bring your IQ down to single digit if you use it
often. Anyone who willingly installs and uses AOL deserves the misery that
it delivers.

I've lost count of how many people I know that got suckered in to trying AOL
and realised their mistake after about the first 5 minutes.

Sharon- Thanks for your help I finally solved the problem by checking
my hard disk using a tool in XP called error checker. Many may recall
this utility in W98 where it was called scan disk.
For the record and in an effort to help others, this is how its done:

left click on MY Computer right click once on drive c: a menu will
come up
you left click on properties then a window will come up
with the status of your hard drive on top of that window
click on tools then error checker.

my hard drive had some kind of corrupt file which was repaired using
the above

No more freeze ups in AOL.

Would be willing to wager that corruption fixed by chkdsk (not scandisk as
in Win9x), was in the AOL folder since that's where your troubles were.
Regardless, am glad to hear that you have this fixed now. Thanks for taking
the time to provide the feedback.
