Help!! WINS Owner 0.0.0.0 Will Not Go Away

J

Jim

My W2K WINS server was found returning 1C (domain
controller) records that do not exist in my network. As a
result, clients attempt to logon to invalid addresses, 25
of them.

These bogus addresses are a combination of past domain
controllers, WINS servers, and clients. Some are
addresses that were never assigned in my network as far as
I can tell. The strange thing is they are n ot visible in
the WINS GUI tool.

However, using the NETSH command they do appear and the
owner address is 0.0.0.0.

I entered this series of commands to view the owner
0.0.0.0:

c:\netsh
netsh>wins
netsh wins>server x.x.x.x (my WINS server)
netsh wins server>show name Name=MYDOMAIN EndChar=1C

I get a list of 1C member entries with an Owner of 0.0.0.0
as well as valid 1C entries for my domain.

Also, I can see the owner 0.0.0.0 in the WINS GUI admin
tool by clicking on Active Registrations, select Action
from the MMC menu, then select Delete Owner. in the list
of owners the 0.0.0.0 appears with no name and a 0 value
in the Highest ID column.

Has anyone seen this problem? How can I delete the
0.0.0.0 owner and all it's owned records?

I have tried the Delete Owner command in NETSH UTILITY but
although it says the owner is deleted, the records owned
by 0.0.0.0 do not go away and the 0.0.0.0 still appears as
an owner. I have tried deleting the owner 0.0.0.0 from
the list in the WINS GUI admin tool and iti goes away from
the GUI, but later reappears. I have also tried disabling
on all my WINS servers and have performed the above on
each of the individually, but no luck. The owner 0.0.0.0
just will not go away and all of the bogus 1C it owns are
still being returned to my clients when they request 1C
records for my domain at logon time.

Please help!

Did you ever receive any helpful information? If so, would you be willing to
share it here? I am having similar problems. I've checked my DNS servers
and these records do not exist here, so I don't know where my WINS is picking
them up from.

Thanks,
Lynn
