Help: Windows XP doesn't recognize the partition

Hi, I am implementing a disk imaging software like Ghost.

To test my software, I backed up a freshly formatted NTFS partition
(thus no user file) to an image file, and restored that image to the
same partition.
Chkdsk detected that the partition type is NTFS, and reported no
problem.
But Windows XP itself doesn't recognize the partition as a NTFS volume,
and reports that it is a RAW partition.
Then I tried various disk restore utilities. Some utlities perfectly
recognized the partition as NTFS and showed system files. But some
other utilities failed.

How can I let the Windows XP recognize the partition as NTFS? What is
wrong?
Any hint will help.

Thanks in advance.

Of course I partitioned.
I meant Windows XP recognizes my partition as a RAW 'partition'. (When
I popup volume properties dialog in explorer, it displays 'partition:
RAW')
But chkdsk recognized my partition as a NTFS 'partition' and found no
error in it.

Please include the previous message within your reply. That said, what is
the name of the software used, are there two drives installed that are
bootable, are both and all partitions NTFS, have you tried on two separate
cables and are these drives WD's (just curious on that one)?

"Raw means that, so far as the system can tell, the volume hasn't been
formatted at all, so there's no format to
convert FROM. The only recourse, normally, is to format the volume."

From here I would suggest using the Recovery Console. Good luck!

Sorry. Google excluded the previous message in its default reply
function. :(
(and one more misuse... a mail was sent to you Kelly - it was meant to
be posted to this group. I am rewriting the message now...:()

BTW, the name of the software is not yet determined, since it is being
written (by me).

Current situation is:
- chkdsk detects no error on the NTFS partition (which was restored by
my software).
- NTFS fails to recognize the NTFS partition, and determines that is is
a RAW partition.
- In event log, event ID 55 (source: ntfs) is logged. So I can guess
that the ntfs filesystem driver read the partition and found
unrecoverable error (which was not found by chkdsk) in it and gave up.

Thank you for your kind reply.

I've forgot to mention the hardware configuration in the last posting.
The machine I tested is VMWare. So no hardware problem is possible.
