Hello

Out of the blue, I have been experiencing the 'infinite logon loop'
problem with a Win2K installation that has been described here before.

I did not install any new hard drives or make any changes. The only
thing I did was to install a trial software which expires in 30 days.

Ironically, I'm able to logon to the system using the Safe Mode with
Networking. However there is not much I can do in this mode.

Here are some of the things I've tried:

1) http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=249321
2) Using the recovery console, I have used fixboot,
fixmbr and then using a Windows 98 disk, I have used
fdisk /mbr.

I attempted to rename the folder that contained my profile but Win2K did
not allow me to do it.

I'm nearly ready to reinstall Win2K from scratch.

Is there anything else I can do?

Thank you very much for any help that anyone can provide.

Regards

There is lots more you can do:
- Remove all non-essential adapters (sound, network) and
try again.
- Disable all your startup tasks and try again
(AutoRuns from http://www.sysinternals.com
StartupCPL: http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml)
- Copy userinit.exe to c:\winnt\system32 on every drive
- Ensure that you have sufficient free space on the drive
where the paging file resides.
- While in Command Console mode, check your services
and disable those you don't like. In view of the sheer
number of services, this will be a trial and error affair . . .

Thank you for the reply, Pegasus. The StartupPCL came in handy and
almost cured this ailment. :)) However there were problems with drive
letters which I think was caused by the solution that MS support document
suggested. To make a long story short, I kept coming back to the same
problem. So I decided to bit the bullet and do a clean re-install.

Nevertheless thanks for the suggestions and take care.
