Help - Vista can sometimes freeze up

Jim

I've been running Vista Ultima for several months. I think it's great EXCEPT
I'm encountering an occasional problem in which the system will freeze and I
cannot do anything except hold in the power button until the computer shuts
down.

The problem can happen while I was moving through normal dialog boxes but it
will almost always happen while playing solitaire. Very frustrating, you
just never know when the system will lock up.

The only programs installed on Vista are Microsoft Office 2003. No add-in
games, etc. I've upgraded the graphic driver (Radeon X1600 card) to one that
supports Vista and tried a different mouse - no help.

I'm seen this problem posted before but not seen any solutions.

Any and all suggestions greatly appreciated.

Does your MB have an onboard wireless network adapter? If so, do not use
an addon wireless adapter. I had that problem with my system and the
solution was removing the networking card and using the onboard adapter.

Are you overclocking? mine did this a few times when the system was unstable
but was ok after going back to the correct values. Also, a corrupt driver
could cause this problem

No, I an not overclocking and I only use a wired network card.

Thanks for the suggestions.

might get and run a temperature and fan speed program and see if possibly you are getting hot.

just for a precaution might blow the cob web and dust bunnies out of the computer. canned air is the way to go.

I use Speed Fan to monitor temps and fans.

I have exactly the same problem. My optical (generic make) mouse has
worked fine for yearson XP and now freezes with Vista Ultimate and
this new motherboard. Maybe if you post your hardware list we can spot
a common problem - i have read on other threads that is you move you
sata drive (on Dell Machines) from Port 1 to 3-4 this solves it, and
other msgs say that this is a problem with NVideas Graphics Card.

My System:
=================================================================================
CPU: AMD x 2 3600
MOBO: ASRock ALiveNF7G-HDready GeForce 7050PV Socket AM2 onboard VGA 8
channel audio mATX Motherboard
HDD: Samsung SpinPoint HD501LJ 500GB SATAII Hard Drive 16MB Cache -
OEM
==================================================================================
So the Graphics are NVidea nForce 630a - (GeForce 6100)
The connectors containing the mouse are part of the nForce 630a
SouthBridge/NorthBridge Chipset.

The intermittant nature of this fault and its frequency in this group
(there are hundreds of threads about it) seem to mean to me that its a
generic h/w fault with either a common chipset like the nForce, or
with Vistas generic driver for the mouse - software.
