When signing in to XP , the computer screen reads "click
the
appropriate user account" I had three working until one
day when they all disapeared. Now I have to click "control
alt delete" keys and sign in (without using a password).
Thus I am going in as the Adminstrator.
When I go to "Control Panel", "User Acounts" in order to
establish a new account (or find my old account names that
disapeared), the computer comes back with an
error message that reads "Current user account is not
recognized. Restart the computer and then open user
accounts" This loop continues to happen. I called Dell
and they had me install the XP disk and hit "repair".
After 37 minutes of running, the same error keeps occuring
and I cannot establish user accounts. Dell informs me that
I must totally reinstall the XP software which will wipe
clean my hard drive. There must be some other way
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I have the same problem. Did you figure out how to fix this? Actually, I
never had to use a password befpre and all of a sudden, it asks me for one.
Any help would be appreciated!

:
Did you try to run the userpasswords2 control panel applet on an XPhome
edition install as I once lost user accounts from the logon screen by
doing just that (that particular applet should only be run on XPpro
machines apparently!)? In the event, a small registry edit was all that
was required to make the account pop back up onto the logon screen (I
knew the account was still there as the relevant documents directories,
etc were still present; it was just that it had dissappeared from the
login options!), which I discovered after googling for a solution! Don't
know whether this will be of any help to your particular situation but
good luck whatever!

Could you please elaborate on the registry fix? I have the same problem.
The user account that did have adminstrative rights now logs in as a guest.
The registry fix would be appreciated greatly.
