Help-USB headers

I 'm trying to hook up my Antec Sonata front panel usb plugs to my P4P800.
One header on the board is marked USB 56 and the other USB 78. Does it
matter which one I use? Is their a difference betrween the two? Thanks.

connector is it going to cancel out the rear connectors?

In the manual they look identical.

With any case, I recommend checking the pinout of the cable assembly
against the standard pinout. Case manufacturers don't have a very good
track record when it comes to adding front panel connectors. Sometimes
the cable assemblies are not rated for USB 2.0 (they only work reliably
at USB 1.1 rates) and sometimes they get miswired. I would get a
cheap multimeter to "ohm out" the cables.

If you search for "connector pinout" using your favorite search engine,
you'll find many sites dispensing the same figures and information.
It is sometimes difficult with these figures, to tell whether they
are documenting the end of a cable or the face of a connector.
(They are different...)

Have a look in this posting for one of my previous experiences:

That depends on whether the cable assembly is "Intel Compatible" or not.
An Intel Compatible cable assembly is one that agrees with what Intel
put in its "connectors for PCs" document. It features the ability to mute
the rear speaker connector, whenever headphones are connected to the
front.

This link says the cable has seven wires, whereas the Sonata manual
says it has six. The seven wire version is Intel compatible, while
the six wire version is not.

Tom,

I also have an Antec Sonata case with an A7N8X-D board and, like you,
could never get the front USB 2.0 ports working, although the rear MB
mounted ports worked fine. I called Antec and they told me that there
was a problem with the early front panel connector boards and they
sent me a new one. When I installed the new front panel board, I
noticed that it said USB 2.0 on it but it was the same revision as the
one already in my case. Needless to say, it didn't work any better
with the new board than it did with the old one. Time to dig out the
ohmmeter!

After buzzing out the circuit, I found that they had reversed the
green wires between USB #1 and USB #2 (I forget which signal it was
but I think it was the data - signal). What I had to do was to swap
the USB #1 and #2 green wires where they connected to the P- header on
the MB. Now the front USB ports work fine, even with USB 2.0 devices.

I would suggest that you check yours as you might have the same
problem. I love my Sonata case, but Antec needs to implement better
quality control. When I first got the case, the blue "Power On" LEDs
on the front didn't work because the leads from the LEDs had not been
cut and were touching each other, shorting out the circuit. Also the
rear fan had sheared its rubber mountings and was lying in the bottom
of the case.

Good luck,

Doug

Thanks for everyones help. I'm going to asume that the USB56 header is for
USB1 and the 78 is USB2. Don't know why ASUS could'nt just mark them that
way. Both case connectors look the same and neither are marked USB1 or 2.
Since USB2 is supposed to be backwards compatible with USB1, why wouldn't
there just be two USB2 headers on the motherboard?

?????

They're both supposed to be USB2; where are you getting the idea that they're
otherwise?
