HELP: usb drives assigned NEW letter EVERY time!

Hello, I hope someone here can help me figure this out. The only
mention I've found of my problem is in another thread here on Google
Groups. The thread is:

http://groups.google.com/group/micr...eneral/browse_thread/thread/287dba9ddd767161/

My problem is exactly as that person described it. Anytime I plug in a
usb drive, whether it be a card reader with a card in it, a laptop
drive in an enclosure or my psp it gives it a new letter. That is: If
I plug in a usb drive and XP assigns it the next logical letter (let's
say F:) and I unplug the drive, then immediately plug it back in to the
same usb port it will not still be F: like it's supposed to be... it
will now be G:. And if I were to completely unplug that drive and
plug another drive, into whatever port, it would not be F: or G: it
will now be H: and this'll continue everytime I plug and unplug a
drive until XP runs out of letters. The unplugged drives won't show
up in My Computer as long as I haven't logged off. If I switch users
they won't show up either. However if I completely log off and log
back in then they will all suddenly be in My Computer. More than a
dozen drives F:-Z: and I can't click on any of them because Windows
will tell me that it is not plugged in or that I need to insert Disk.
Once it has cycled through all of the letters and it's come to Z: it
will no longer recognize any usb drives I plug in. Presumably because
there are no letters to assign after Z:. I'll then have to restart
the computer because if I reboot all the drives disappear and it starts
again at F:.

I know it sounds like a strage problem and I can't find anything about
it anywhere. I hope someone is able to provide some answers. Thank
you so much in advance.

How amazing!

I went looking through my programs and found out Spyware Doctor was
indeed installed. I don't remember installing it myself, it might have
been my sister or brother. Anyway, I iunistalled it right away it and:
Problem Solved!

Thank you so much, I have been exasperated over this problem for
months, I was beginning to think there was nothing for it but to
reinstall Windows and I really didn't want to have to do that... I only
got this computer a couple of month's ago.

Thank you again! :)
