HELP, think disk crashed

Hi everyone, my boyfriend was unable to send out any email and kept getting
error messages saying his SMTP wasn't correct. I suggested he do a System
Restore, but at the end of it he had a fatal error with a blue screen. He
did a hard reboot, same screen came up. Any suggestions? Do you think his
hard disk is gone? If so I will tell him he needs to reinstall his software,
which he can do, but it will wipe everything out on his disk. So that's a
last-ditch effort - am hoping someone will have another suggestion. He can't
even get to the Windows screen, so it won't do any good to suggest Dr. Watson

If he has an WinXP system disk (not restore image), he could do a
repair install by booting the CD.
