Help & Support - Did you know?

Just an annoyance really.

I have looked at the help page and under Did you know? it says that I have
not got an internet connection, yet a machine sitting next to it through the
same router comes up with headings!

Is there something that needs to be tweaked to get it to work. BTW I'm on a
cable network.

Thanks

I don't have an answer, but, when looking at my Help, Did you know?, it
describes what would be displayed in that area if I had an internet
connection and provids a link to the 'Establish an Internet Connection
Wizard.' I, too, am on a cable modem and router. I did try it with IE
open.....same results.........odd. Also checked my firewall and it should
not be blocking access. I'll monitor this thread for answers and do some
investigating.
Heirloom, old and got my curiosity
up

"Did you know" was broken on some comfigurations after SP 2. I have the same problem. Different solutions have been published on the web and in newsgroups, but they don't always work.

This is just one of a small number number of Windows features that became broken for some configurations after SP 2. Fortunately, it's just a minor annoyance. From what I remember from the days when "Did you know" was working, we're not really missing anything.

Steven

Thanks, M and D......
As you stated, I'm not missing much as I had never noticed it there
before this thread. My trips to Help normally went directly to the Index or
Search. Also, as you mentioned, the solutions presented on the Web and in
Groups are not consistently successful. The following is one that I have
not yet tested on my machine:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've observed this always happens with broadband connection. When I
connected to internet using dial-up, Help and Support could connect to the
internet and download the news block XML files (2 XML files will be
downloaded, and then merged based one some criteria) and the "Did you know?"
updated correctly. "Did you know?" actually reflects what;s in the XML file.

When using broadband (ADSL), I changed the value "EnableAutodial" to 1 in
this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings

This works sometime, but not consistent.

Ramesh, thank you for posting the link to Google Groups which offered a fix
to the problem I was having with Do You Know not updating and telling me I
wasn't connected to the internet when I was. The fix worked for me but I
have no idea of what I just did. As a person who's trying to learn, I'd
appreciate knowing the why along with the how. I know there's a lot to learn
but if I take it 1 problem at a time, it somehow makes the bigger picture
come together. If you're willing to offer the why to the how of that fix,
I'd be very interested in reading it. I'm software savvy but not real
technically savvy, and I'd like to learn that part too.

Now I can search for a fix to my second issue I'm having with XP Pro, Svc.
Pk. 2. which is how to turn off 2 windows opening horizontally at the same
time. Every time I get an IE6 window to fully open I think it's fixed, then
I open another one and I see only the top horizontal half, so evidentally
it's not fixed.

But thanks for the link to the google.groups fix. That makes me feel more
secure.

"Did you know" was broken on some comfigurations after SP 2. I have the same

This is just one of a small number number of Windows features that became
